Alice on Play8oy: A Slot Built on Lewis Carroll's Wonderland

Where the Alice story came from
The book was published in 1865, three years after the afternoon that produced it. On 4 July 1862, Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (who wrote as Lewis Carroll) and the Reverend Robinson Duckworth took a rowing boat up the Isis, as the Thames is called at Oxford. With them were the three young daughters of Henry Liddell, Dean of Christ Church:
- Lorina Charlotte Liddell, 13, born 1849 ("Prima" in the book's opening poem)
- Alice Pleasance Liddell, 10, born 1852 ("Secunda")
- Edith Mary Liddell, 8, born 1853 ("Tertia")
That date later became known as the "golden afternoon", though accounts of the weather that day disagree.
From a boat trip to a manuscript
The trip began at Folly Bridge near Oxford and ended about five miles away at the village of Godstow. On the way, Dodgson told the girls a story about a bored little girl called Alice who goes looking for adventure. They loved it, and Alice Liddell asked him to write it down for her. He started the next day. A month later the group took another boat trip, and by November he was working on the manuscript properly. The earliest draft no longer exists.
