Inside and outside bets

Bets fall into two broad groups.

• Inside bets cover a single number or a small cluster of neighbours on the grid. A straight-up bet on one number usually pays 35 to 1. Splits, streets and corners cover two, three or four numbers and pay less.
• Outside bets sit around the edge of the layout: red or black, odd or even, low or high, dozens and columns. They win far more often and pay correspondingly less, even money on the red/black style bets.

The trade-off is always the same. The more numbers a bet covers, the more often it wins and the smaller the payout.

The zero and the house edge

The green zero is what gives the casino its edge. When it comes up, outside bets such as red or black lose, and the payouts on every bet are set slightly below the true odds. No betting system changes that, whether you double up after a loss or stick to one number.
