Blackjack rules in brief

You and the dealer each get cards. The goal is to end with a total closer to 21 than the dealer without going over.

• Number cards count at face value. Jack, Queen and King count as 10.
• An Ace counts as 1 or 11, whichever helps your hand.
• An Ace plus a 10-value card on your first two cards is a blackjack, the best hand.

Your choices on each hand

After the first two cards you decide what to do:

• Hit: take another card.
• Stand: keep your total and end your turn.
• Double: double your bet, take exactly one more card, then stand.
• Split: if your two cards match, split them into two separate hands with a second bet.

If your total goes over 21 you bust and lose immediately, even if the dealer later busts too. That is where the house edge comes from. The dealer then plays by fixed rules, usually drawing until reaching at least 17.
